Happy Birthday Gavin!

Today we celebrated Gavin's 6th birthday (his birthday was on Wednesday). Because his birthday is so close to Halloween, we took advantage of the theme and had a Halloween party. All the kids (plus us) got dressed up... it was a blast! We always have fun when our family and friends get together. :-) So, Matt, Bailie, Taylor, and I all dressed up as pirates. Ethan is Wolverine and Gavin is Venom. (The boys are with their mom this year for Halloween so that's why they weren't part of our "theme.") Hopefully I will have some pictures to come later.

Over the last (almost) two years we have all grown a lot closer and it's been so awesome watching all the kids together. They all really do get along great (for the most part) and they are all such blessings in our lives. Gavin is such a little sweetheart. His excitement and enthusiasm are so sincere and animated, it's impossible not to smile. He loves to share with others, whether it be sharing his latest piece of artwork or sharing his candy prize, he is always so happy to do it. He loves to pick flowers and give them to me... the sweetest thing ever!

Even though Gavin isn't my biological son, he is like my son and I'm so thankful that I get to be a part of his life. I can't wait to watch him, and our other kids, grow and develop throughout the years.

Happy Birthday Gavin! :-)

A Day in the Life…

5:50 am – Alarm clock #1 goes off – hit snooze!
6:00 – Alarm clock #1 goes off again – hit snooze!
6:05 – Alarm clock #2 goes off – hit snooze but tell myself to GET UP!
6:10 – Alarm clock #1 and 2 go off again – ok, now I really need to get up!

(Sometimes this goes until 6:30!)
I sit up, eyes blurry and body still half asleep, and stumble into the bathroom. Brush my teeth, take my shower. At 6:15 the girls’ alarm goes off. Get out of the shower; usually hear their alarm still going off. Don’t ask me how they sleep through 15 minutes of ear piercing beeping.

Quickly dry and make my way to their room. Flip on the lights, turn off the alarm, pull off their covers and tell them to get up. Bump my way down the hall into the dining room, let the dog(s) out in the backyard. Back to the girls’ room to pull the covers off (again) and tell them to get up (again).

Back to my room to get dressed, do my hair & make up. Girls are up and showering. Then dressing, brushing hair and teeth. Except Taylor, whose hair I have to do. Dog(s) get fed. Then comes the reminders: Do you have your homework? Do you have your snack? Are your shoes & socks on? Where’s your coat? These are mixed with “Hurry up!” and “You’ve got 2 minutes!” and “Ok… we’re going to leave then.” (This morning add in putting make up on Bailie for her Halloween costume party and dressing Taylor for her field trip in the rain.)

We finally make it out the door, usually, hopefully, around 7 am. Drive to the fairgrounds. Throw Allie some hay, fill up the water buckets, take off her blanket.

(This morning add in going to the bank to get $ for Taylor’s last minute field trip and stopping at the gas station.)

Drive to Amity, take Bailie to school. Back to McMinnville to drop Taylor off. At last, drive to the hospital for work… there by 8 am.

Work all day. Off at 5. Every evening is different but this will be today:

Leave work 15 minutes early, quickly pick up Taylor and get back to the soccer fields. Stand in the cold rain for over an hour watching Bailie play soccer while trying to keep Taylor out of trouble. Game is over around 6:20. Girls will go home with their dad. I will go home to feed the dog(s). Drive to the fairgrounds to feed Allie. Turn her out to stretch her legs, clean her stall, put her blanket on. Back home to find something for myself to eat.

Girls dropped off at 7:30. Get clothes ready for the next day. Go over homework and finish up anything that wasn’t done at Dad’s. Sometimes throw in a shower. Pajamas on, teeth brushed. In bed around 8 pm.

Do a load or two of laundry. Try to pick up around the house, do dishes, etc. Feed cat. Figure out what needs to be done for the next morning or evening activities.

FINALLY! Some ME time. Catch up on my DVR’d shows, facebook, blog, email. Maybe read a book. All this and try to be in bed before 10? And then… we do it all again tomorrow.

I wonder why I’m so tired?

Definition of a Good Parent

What does it mean to be a parent? This thought has been on my mind for a while now. Every parent has their own values and ideas of how to raise their kids. Some are better than others but what defines a good parent? Not everyone is going to have the same definition as me and that doesn’t mean that they are any less of a parent. Sometimes though, I really wonder about certain parents and how their actions are justified in their own head. Do these people really think that what they are doing is benefiting their children? No, I can’t imagine that to be the case… I would imagine that these types of parents just never quite matured enough to understand that once you become a parent, your kids become priority over yourself.

So let’s talk about what being a parent means. Just for fun, I looked it up in the dictionary:

PARENT
1. one that begets or brings forth offspring
2. an animal or plant that is regarded in relation to its offspring

Hmm. I don’t know about you but for me, this doesn’t cut it. There’s so much more to being a “good” parent. Here are a few things I personally think are important.

* Love your child. Tell your children every day that you love them and take every opportunity you can to be affectionate. Don’t just say it but show it. When all is said and done, if nothing else, I want my kids to remember their childhood as being full of love.

* Recognize your child for who they are. Every child is different and they are not you. Don’t push them to be someone they aren’t; they will love you for it.

* Don’t push your child into activities they aren’t interested in. Simple enough, right? Well, it’s easy to encourage your children to do something because you think it would be good for them. Parents don’t always know best. With that said, I also think it’s important to make sure your child follows through with the commitment that they do make.

* Discipline your child. Be kind but firm. Follow through and don’t give in to begging and whining. Kids thrive on boundaries and need to know they can’t walk all over their parents.

* Be involved with their education. Your kids are in school for a big portion of the day… shouldn’t you know who’s caring for them? Parents and teachers should be a team, working together for the best of the kid. Ask regularly how your child is doing in school. Set aside a time to complete homework; help when needed but don’t do it for them. Ask your child every day how school was, what they liked, what they didn’t. Show an interest.

* Spend quality time with your kids. Show them you value this time and their company.

* Pick your battles! Don’t argue about all the little things you don’t like; save the battles for the big things.

There are tons of other things I could add but these are the big ones that come to mind as I make my way down the road of parenthood. Most are easier said than done and maybe don’t come naturally. It’s a learning process and we all make mistakes. The sign of a good parent is that you learn from those mistakes and you grow.

Signs of a not-so-good parent? When your kids are more mature, responsible, and caring than you are. Just saying…

“It's not only children who grow. Parents do too. As much as we watch to see what our children do with their lives, they are watching us to see what we do with ours. I can't tell my children to reach for the sun. All I can do is reach for it myself.”

A Sad Day

I've tried to come up with some nice words to put with this post but I can't think of any. Even after this many years, this is still a day that my family grieves for our loss of the most wonderful woman. Those of you who knew her, will appreciate this simple scrapbook page in rememberance. Those who didn't know her, words cannot explain what a huge part she played in every life that she touched. I'll leave you with this quote that I think fits perfectly: "Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us everyday." Happy Birthday Mom... We Love You!

Welcome!

Hello Blog Followers!

I’ve been thinking lately about how much of a slacker I am when it comes to blogs and keeping them up to date. I have so much going on that writing gets pushed to the bottom of my never ending “to do” list. Well, today I got the urge to post but when I went to my blog I realized that so much has changed in the last year (which is when I posted last!), that it would be easier to just make a new blog. I mean, we aren’t really the “Sinde Girls” anymore, ya know?

So, here we are. I’m not going to make any promises to post regularly because then I probably won’t. But, I will promise that I will TRY to post more often than once a year. ;-)
